In covering an announcement about Sona Mobile’s upcoming BlackBerry Media Player, PDAStreet dished out some info about a rumor that RIM is working on a 3G BlackBerry device that is being built specifically to support multimedia capabilities, possibly including music playback.

As a new owner of the BlackBerry 8700c, I’m not going to worry about buyer’s remorse yet. I’d love to have more multimedia support on the device, but there are so many ways that it could be messed up. The article guesses that RIM’s interest in a multimedia BlackBerry is, “because operators want to support handsets that maximize the sending and receiving of all types of wireless content (from ringtones to music to pictures to e-mail) for revenue purposes.” The best way to ruin the device would be to worry about how operators can make money off it.

I hope that RIM has a different motivation. A motivation to win the consumer market. I bought the 8700c as an individual, choosing it over the Windows Mobile and Palm alternatives. I think that a little effort by RIM to meet the needs of people like me could go a long way.
